Kurigata, was a small protusion fitted to the side of the saya usually made from buffalo horn and was used to attach the sageo to the saya. Kaiu Kamui produced a saya with jade inlaid along the edges and small gems in the shape of a flower surrounding the kurigata that caught the eye of the Empress Iweko I and was appointed as the Jeweled Smith.
