Both officials MUST be in position at the STARTING END of the pool. Both officials must INDEPENDENTLY determine, in WRITING, that a relay swimmer has left early. At the conclusion of the race, the two officials give their WRITTEN “ Early Relay Take-off” disqualification card to the referee. If the cards agree, the referee will instruct the starter to notify the computer operator. The starter raises his/her hand to signify an infraction. The referee will notify the team and/or coach (es) which swimmer left early and the team is disqualified.
