The first production model of the P-82 series was the P-82B model. Being based on the airframes of two P-51H Mustang fighters, the twin mustang was equipped with two Packard V-1650 Engines that were capable of propelling it at speeds of up to 775 km/h. The aircraft was designed to be able to escort American B-29 bombers over Japan at distances exceeding the range of conventional P-51 Mustangs or P-38 Lightning fighters. Interestingly, both pilots of the aircraft could take control, alternating on long flights. The total operational range of the Twin Mustang was around 3,500 kilometers while its service ceiling was approximately 12,160 meters.
