The Pilotwings universe (パイロットウイングス, Pilotwings) refers to the Smash Bros. universe's collection of characters, stages, or other properties that hail from the Pilotwings series of amateur flight simulation games. The first game, Pilotwings, released in 1991 as a launch title for the North American version of the SNES, was noteworthy for being an early example of a game that used the console's Mode 7 graphical technique to enhance realism, in a similar vein to the launch racing game F-Zero.
