Sam's mother, Thelma Louise Beckett was married to John Samuel Beckett and had three children with him, Sam, Katie and Tom. According to Sam, Thelma is a great cook and her and John's marriage is strong and their relations are great. She was a very patient and loving woman, and a nurturing mother who thinks that Women's Lib was probably a good thing - for other women. As of the timeset for the Quantum Leap project, the late 1990s, Thelma was residing in Hawaii with still alive and retired husband John.
