Liz Martin was in Near East studies at the UC Berkeley. She was friends with Jen Barkman. Barkman, who was under stress as she worked on her dissertation, wound up screaming at Liz over an innocuous comment. Barkman shared this story with Steve Whortleberry when they first met, asking him if writing a dissertation made everyone hostile.
