Tori Shogi (禽将棋 or 鳥将棋, 'Bird Chess') is a variant of Shogi (Japanese Chess) invented by Toyota Genru, a student of Ohashi Soei, in 1828. In the early 1990s, several Tori Shogi tournaments were held in Royston, England. The strongest player was David Murphy at this time. In 2001, a tournament was organized at the 5th Mindsport Olympiad in London. Tori Shogi is still one of the more popular Shogi variants.
