A character in the work The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser (published in 1590 & 1596). He was a tree who recounted his story to Redcrosse and Fidessa (Duessa in disguise) that he was once a man. The tree next to him was once a beautiful woman named Fraelissa, who was his true love. He defeated a knight in combat and won a lady named Duessa. He ditched his lover Fraelissa for Duessa when she used her magic to transform Fraelissa into a tree (though he did not know she cast the spell). Duessa turned out to be an ugly witch disguised as a beautiful woman. When he saw her true form, he tried to flee, but was turned into a tree. Inside his branches flowed blood, not sap. His name means "Brother Doubt".
