The University of Maryland women's basketball team has been a prominent program in the history of women's basketball. As a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Lady Terrapins have been regular season and tournament champions on numerous occasions. They were struggling with a losing record before Brenda Frese was named the team's head coach in 2002. Shay Doron is credited as being her first major recruit. Since then, they have regained their position as one of the top teams in the country. In 2006, with only four short years under Frese, the Lady Terps won their first NCAA Championship in their third trip to the Final Four - their first Final Four since 1989.
