Aliens in the Star Trek universe can take on all sorts of forms besides humanoid. Generally, humanoid forms of various sorts are used since they tend to be easily relatable in story terms, and on the production side it basically requires using make-up and prosthetics to whatever extent it may need to be used to depict a certain group of alien humanoids.
