Incumbent Prime Minister Jacqueline Townsend of the conservative-libertarian GNP, who presided over a minority government together with the liberal PP tolerated by the centre-left Greens of Dranland, was up for re-election. Her main challenger was socialist opposition leader Antonio Benandez.
