In 1967 the National Science Foundation established the Office of Computing Activities, which was responsible for providing Federal leadership in exploring and developing the uses of computers in education and research. Exclusive of the support for computer services provided through research grants, the Office had cognizance over all computer-related activities within the NSF. Its organization is intended to provide a framework within which these activities may be supported and coordinated.
