The United States of New England remained in the hands of Britain after the disastrous treaty ending the Seven Years War in 1763. The loss of the southern colonies put pressure on New England to provide revenue for the United Kingdom and in 1776, a formal declaration of independence was declared. Sweden and France were quick to recognize the existence of the fledgling nation, and clandestine support gave it a military upper hand against Britain. In 1783, peace was declared by the Treaty of New Stockholm (heretofore New York or New Amsterdam).
