Fractal calculus was an advanced level of calculus taught at Starfleet Academy. Kathryn Janeway took fractal calculus from Admiral Patterson. In 2371, upon being granted command of the newly-commissioned USS Voyager by Patterson, Janeway joked that she still had nightmares about his fractal calculus final exam. (VOY: "Relativity")
