The Dog and Bottle was a Newton & Ridley pub located on the banks of the River Irwell in Handover Street, Pendlebury. Described by Bet Gilroy as a "right old dump", it was known by Betty Turpin for its awful meat pies and not being scrupulous when it came to cleaning. In 1990, landlords Ted and Renee Wilkinson took "early retirement" when the brewery refurbished the Dog and Bottle with an USA theme and rebranded it The Riverboat, replacing them with a manager who, according to Bet Gilroy, didn't look old enough to drink.
