The Jedi would have tournaments between Jedi Apprentices every year. The tournaments were usually standard tournaments, where there would be several duels, then the winner of each duel would duel another winner, and so on until only one person remained. In 63 BBY, Yoda wanted to surprise the apprentices by changing it. Yoda took the 64 apprentices that had signed up for the competition to a large park-type area on Coruscant.
