Leonard Kempinski came to the village in 1992 as a friend of Amos Brearly that Annie Sugden met while out visiting Amos in Spain. She invited him back with her and stayed with the Sugden family for Christmas. Annie's son Jack was very much against the marriage but he and his mother reconciled before she married Leonard. Leonard and Annie married on 28th October 1993 but their marriage only lasted two months. Annie and Leonard decided to emigrate to Spain and whilst Annie's younger son Joe was driving them to the airport on 30th December 1993, a piece of burning wreckage from the Emmerdale plane crash forced Joe's car off the road. Leonard was killed in the accident. He finally appeared on 5th January 1994, but as a corpse.
