Martin, at under 200 years old, was the youngest member of the Sanguine Club, a group of five vampires living secretly in London in 1888. He was the first to encounter Jack, and proposed him for membership. Even after the others met Jack, and found him distasteful, Martin insisted that they at least try to bring him into the fold, personally extending the invitation to Jack. When the meeting went badly, as Jack insulted the Club, Martin was repentant, and helped the Club capture and bury Jack in the foundations of the Tower Bridge, which was early on in its construction.
