The 2004 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 was a Nextel Cup event held at Atlanta Motor Speedway on October 31, 2004. A dark week for Hendrick Motorsports followed a plane crash, but Jimmie Johnson gave the team the best medicine. With a few laps to go, Johnson dove under Mark Martin and drove away to his third straight victory. It was a small comfort for the tragedy, as his hood painted with the victims took the checkered flag. Also a poor race for points leader Kurt Busch (42nd) narrowed the points lead, with Johnson trailing by 59 points. Stats
