The group began with a campaign to re-introduce the North Coast commuter rail service from Dunedin to towns and villages such as Purakaunui, Waitati, Warrington, Seacliff, Waikouaiti, and Palmerston, launched on 17 September 2008 at a public meeting in Waitati. The campaign was conceived by car-poolers in Purakaunui. Following interest from other communities to the south of Dunedin, such as Mosgiel, the campaign is developing a wider scope.
