Sothic is an adjective meaning pertaining to the ancient Egyptian calendar system, which set the year to 365 days (12 months of 30 days each + 5 epagomenes or “extra days”). The Sothic year is defined as starting with the rising of Sirius above the eastern horizon at dawn (usually mid-July), a time which roughly corresponded with the flooding of the Nile, an annual event which was central to Egyptian society. Sothis is the Greek word for Sirius (the ancient Egyptian word for Sirius is Sopdet).
