The Ambulance Man had the unenviable job of ferrying a wheelchair-bound Percy Sugden from Weatherfield General to 3 Coronation Street in March 1990. Percy had broken his ankle when he slipped on an apple from Phyllis Pearce's burst shopping bag. In high spirits despite his diminished state, Percy told the ambulance man that he intended to resume his school crossing patrol duties as soon as possible, but the ambulance man advised him to leave it to somebody else for a couple of weeks and reminded him to keep twiddling his toes.
