The Aquarius Festival was a ten-day music and cultural festival organised by the Australian Union of Students (AUS) in May, 1973. AUS decided to have its festival outside of the main urban areas of Austarlia. The main AUS cultural organisers at the time were Johnny Allen, Graeme Dunstan and Paul Joseph, and they 'scouted' in northern New South Wales to find a suitable location. Since the Aquarius Festival, Nimbin has been best known as an alternative lifestyle centre of Australia, the hub of the Rainbow Region.
