Liberty County gets its name from the city of Liberty, despite many rumors that the city got its name from the county. An earlier prospect for the county's name was "Andrews County", after the nearby Andrews River, which, in turn, was named for explorer Zonapath T. Andrews. "Liberty County" was decided on as the county's name in the 1880s.
