Thomas Allen Coburn is a Republican U.S. Senator from Oklahoma and one of its several controversial conservative figures. Like his three conservatibe physician-legislator counterparts in Georgia, Phil Gingrey, Paul Broun Jr. and Tom Price, Coburn continues to present himself as someone with special insight because of his medical training. Like them he has paid particularly intense attention to the financial health of the insurabce lobby and fellow doctors, but not to the health of ordinary Americans. Coburn presents a classic case in which conservatism, the ideology of myopic selfishness and ignorance, produces moral deficiency.
