The Trent Affair is largely considered the main turning point in the First Civil War. The strategy of the CS was to gain an ally in Europe. After the US captured the Trent and removed the Confederate diplomats, Britain demanded an apology. When the United States let the diplomats go but didn't issue an apology, the UK, followed shortly after by Portugal gave the CSA diplomatic recognition.
