The rubber skin, or synthetic latex, was among the first type of infiltration disguises used by Skynet on the Series 600 Terminators in order to pass off as a human being. As the infiltration sheath was a prosthetic rubber, the Terminators were easily spotted by resistance members, thereby making the disguise and infiltration attempts worthless. This has led to more advanced methods of infiltration, such as living tissue, which would be used on later Terminator series and types, such as the T-800 Terminator.
