There are two versions of the song, the first, song made two weeks before the reunification of Jerusalem, tells the story of the Jewish people's longing to return to the Old City of Jerusalem and the return of all Jews to the land of Israel. After the 1967 Six-Day War, the song was altered, saying how the Jews had returned to Israel. Today there are different lyrics for "Jerusalem of Gold" but they all talk of the Jewish people's struggle to return to Israel. "Jerusalem of Gold" has been translated into Hebrew as well as English. To this day, it remains a very popular song.
