Djalal Maheswari (October 23rd 1902 - September 13th 1987 aged 87) was a South Asian Melanesian Islamic socialist and independence activist who served on the Provisional Convention of Melanesia after being elected in 1958. He also served as the founder and leader of the People's Melanesian League until 1955 (one of the foremost independence movements in Melanesia) and as a longtime member of the Socialist Party of Melanesia until his death in 1987. Located on the rightist faction of the Socialist Party, Maheswari became a polarising figure on the Melanesian left for his socially conservative and populist views.
