Usagi Fumata was a bushi of the Hare Clan. He and his best friend Usagi Ginoro competed for the affection of a young woman, and eventually she selected and betrothed his friend. Less than a month before Gintoro's wedding, his betrothed and Fumata were kidnapped by a Bloodspeaker cell who took them to the Shinomen Mori. Fumata was saved by Ginoro, who found and slaughtered the Maho-tsukai, but he could not save his bethrothed. Gintoro did not overcome the idea that Fumata had betrayed the woman to the Bloodspeakers in exchange for his life, and he became Fumata's Sworn Enemy.
