The Widow Black appears in The Journey Begins and is Susan's mother, living in Kingstown. She has a very minor role and comes into Susan's room just as she is being carried away by a Not-Man. The Widow Black is described as being very protective of Susan but when Roland saves Susan from the Dogan, The Widow Black "turned a deaf ear to the squeaking of Susan's bed".
