In February 2012, the Minister for Defence Stephen Smith announced the appointment of Mr Peter Jennings, a former Deputy Secretary in the Department of Defence, as ASPI's new Executive Director for a term of five years. He replaces Major General (Retd) Peter Abigail, who held the position from early 2005. The inaugural Director was Hugh White, now Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University.
