Datamining is the extraction of information from large volumes of data. Classic examples used in marketting (allegedly) include: * Attempt to sell SCUBA gear to people buying flight tickets to Australia. * Place nappies and beer next to each other in supermarket (to target husbands shopping in a hurry). Datamining can be used in scientific research, for example to find similarities and differences between protein molecules. New ideas about the function of molecules can be inferred from similarity to molecules of known function.
