Portal 1 was a Federation Starfleet space station that replaced Deep Space 9 at the entrance to the Bajoran wormhole by the 31st century. When a Starfleet vessel in the Gamma Quadrant experienced a transwarp drive explosion, the crew tried to reach Federation Portal 1 to ensure the survival of the Dax symbiont, whose host had died in the explosion.
