Heisei (平成 Heisei) is the current era in Japan after the Shōwa period. The Heisei era started on January 8th 1989, the first day after the death of the reigning Emperor, Hirohito. His son, Akihito, succeeded to the throne. In accordance with Japanese customs, Hirohito was posthumously renamed "Emperor Shōwa" on the 31st of January, 1990. In Super Sentai, the Heisei period started during the last episodes of Choujuu Sentai Liveman, with Kousoku Sentai Turboranger being the first Super Sentai title of the Heisei period.
