The ground-crew is the last line of defense against Thread on Pern. They are armed with flame-throwers, and inspect the ground after a Threadfall, to look for signs of any Thread having escaped the dragons above. They were redundant in the Southern Continent where the grubs had proliferated enough to provide automatic "natural" protection.
