Michael Malone is the brother of Jack Malone. During a conversation with Emily Reynolds, where she said to Jack that she is not very close of her sister, Jack answered that he have a brother like this. Jack also stated that after his mother's death, his family exploded, it's possibly for this that Michael don't kept in touch with his brother and his father.
