Ian is a divorced father of Julia, another Chilton student, who meets Lorelai and Rory on Rory's first day. He flirts with Lorelai at Chilton, and then asks her out at the Independence Inn. Lorelai is attracted to him, but refuses out of concern to let Rory adjust to Chilton.
