The Midwinter's Day Riot was an outbreak of sectarian violence and civil disobedience in Videssos the city during the Midwinter's Day celebrations. Incited by the heretical priest Digenis, the rioters burned down a large portion of the capital before being broken up by soldiers loyal to Krispos the Avtokrator. Several rioters were killed; even more were arrested, among them Digenis, who was held for special interrogation by Krispos as to the whereabouts of his missing son, Phostis as well as to the goings-on of the Thanasioi rebellion in the west of the empire.
