"Sir Walter Raleigh was the Janus superstar of the early 17th century. He was a poet, an explorer, and . . . a pirate! Raleigh sailed the high seas, searching for new lands and hidden treasure. In 1587, he organized an expedition to establish a colony on Roanoke Island in Virginia. Although Raleigh himself remained in England, there are rumors that he sent a secret, and possibly stolen, an item with the settlers. (His decision to stay behind was a lucky one. The colony eventually disappeared--one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in history.) In 1603, Raleigh was charged with treason and imprisoned in the Tower of London for 13 years.
