Force Research Unit (FRU) is alleged to be a name used by a covert military intelligence unit established by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence in the Intelligence Corps of the British Army based at Templer Barracks, Ashford in Kent. The FRU is alleged to have been formed between 1980 and 1981 replacing an existing unit as an agent handling capability, the previous existing unit until 1980 had links to the Ballykinler Barracks where recruits from the Army Cadet Force were trained in intelligence gathering from younger family members of possible IRA sympathisers, these cadets were recruited across Britain and placed with handlers, these cadets were all under 18 yrs of age, one of the first was cadet Fsr Powell.
