Hurricane Arlene was a moderate category 2 hurricane during late June and early July of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. The 2nd tropical cyclone, 1st named storm and 1st hurricane of the annual hurricane season, Arlene developed near the coast of Cuba as Tropical Depression Two on June 27, before intensifying into a category 2 hurricane as it moved out into the Gulf of Mexico. Arlene made landfall with 75mph winds in Louisiana on the afternoon of July 2nd, rapidly weakening into an open trough during the following afternoon. Hurricane Arlene was held accountable for 5 deaths, and $240 million in damages. The name was submitted for retirement, but the WMO denied the application, and so the name was used again in 2023 as a result.
