Keefe's initial foray into the sport came during the 1956 season, when he finished 45th in the year-end points. He finished 12th in his initial series race at Portland, that after qualifying 4th and completing all but five laps. Keefe quickly proved it was no fluke, recording a career-best 4th place finish at Eureka in his next start and then tacking on a seventh place run at Sacramento later in the year. In addition, Keefe finished no worse than 13th during his other starts during the year at tracks like Merced and San Mate
