Shortly after he turned five, his parent divorced as his father went on another deployment with the Military. Accounts from his family suggested that he was a troubled child during his first eight years of schooling; Making sorry grades and acting up in class. He was an embrassement to his father and a constant worry to his mother. Fortunately, during the latter part of his schooling he turned his act around completely. Becoming an honors student at the public academy, he was offered scholarship at the Imperial Naval Academy.
