An Alluvial fan is a variety fan shaped deposits that are generally associated with arid or semi-arid environments. They form when a stream flows over the edge of a sharp canyon. They are commonly associated with debris flows and braided stream channels. The end of the fan is called the toe, and because they move outwards, a vertical transect through the fan will show all sections of the fan from the apex to the toe.
