Lee had surrendered his Army of Virginia in Richmond, VA, the final skirmishes of that war were fought just east of Chapel Hill, NC, by the flanking defenders of Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's remaining army of the South, the Confederacy. The North Carolina Collection, a historical collection housed at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, makes reference to these skirmishes, which involved calvary and army foot soldiers, along the swamps that border the area of present day NC Highway 54 and Interstate 40 in that region due east of Chapel Hill along the Stage Coach Rd.
