Subtraction is a Binary operation that means "subtract the second value from the first value". It cannot be used in place of the negate command, even though both look similar and are represented by the same symbol in other languages. :value-list returns a list in which each element is subtracted from value. :list-list if both lists are the same size, this subtracts each element of the second list from the matching element of the first list.
