The monsoons are a series of winds that bring in moist clouds that drench the areas of India and Southeast Asia in rain during the Summer. These weather patterns are very sensitive and vulnerable to changes in the environment. In the summer of the year 843 (90 AD) the monsoons did not arrive in Southeast Asia and the people of Nan as well as Srivijaya fell into famine. At the same time the deserts of Northern Sinica began to send great sandstorms farther outside the desert than they had ever reached before, which also chocked many of the river valleys of Sinica.
