In The Queen of Attolia, Eugenides suffers from terrible nightmares after his right hand is cut off by the queen of Attolia. These nightmares are suggested to come him from the Eddisian Gods in addition to the physical and emotional trauma involved the act. Often, he is given lethium in order to sleep without nightmares, although Eugenides jokingly tried to use wine as a substitute. Though he overcomes his deep-seated fear of Attolia through his love for her, Eugenides continues to have nightmares in The King of Attolia, which he describes as being sent from the gods to keep him humble.
