The annual North American Snow Storm season ranges from October 1 to April 30, the following year. Storms and low pressure systems are identified by the Weather Services International (WSI) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administraion (NOAA) and can be classified from the Winter Weather Index of the United States (WWIUS) and the Regional Snow Index (RSI). The Regional Snow Index makes use of population and regional differences to assess the impact of snowfall. For example, areas which receive very little snowfall on average may be more adversely affected than other regions, and so the index will grant storms in those regions higher severity.
